How to Restore the Database
This topic has two sections:
If the power goes out while you are using FleetVIP, you could lose data. Or if your hard drive fails. Or some other unexpected emergency strikes. Or you get a new computer. In these scenarios, you will need to restore your FleetVIP database.
If your computer or hard drive crashed, proceed with the following steps. This assumes you can locate a backup of your database.
TIP: Use the Print button at the top of this window to print a copy of this topic for reference.
AS you follow these steps and look for files that start with VIP, if you only see VIP file names with no three letter extensions like .TPS and .BAK, then you need to use Windows Explorer and click the Tools menu/Folder options/View tab and uncheck the 8th item called "Hide extensions for known file types" then click OK.
If you don't have a Tools menu, then click Organize / Layout / Menu bar.
Remember - To copy a file, right click on the file and select Copy.
To paste it into a new folder, right click a blank area in the new folder location and click paste.
Step 1 - Download the FleetVIP free demo version from the website at www.alembx.com and install it on your computer.
Step 2 - Launch Windows Explorer (To launch Windows Explorer in Win XP/7, click Start/Run/ then type 'Explorer'.)
Step 3 - Copy/paste your backup file (probably named VIP.BAK) into the FleetVIP folder, if it is not already there.
(Assuming that backup file name is VIP.BAK since that is the default name unless you changed it to something else. The VIP.BAK may already be in the Documents folder or the AutoVIP or FleetVIP folder. If you do not know where you have been saving your VIP.BAK backup file, run a Windows file search on VIP.BAK if that is possible. If you have been using an external drive or cloud service, look there. If you do not have a recent VIP backup file or a copy of the VIP.TPS file, you may not be able to restore your data.)
Step 4 - Rename the VIP.TPS file in the FleetVIP folder to VIP.OLD
Step 5 - Rename the VIP.BAK file to VIP.TPS
Step 6 - Run the program and verify your data is there.
To transfer your FleetVIP database to a new computer:
Step 1 - Download the FleetVIP free demo version from the website at www.alembx.com and install it on your new computer.
Step 2 - Launch Windows Explorer (To launch Windows Explorer in Win XP/7, click Start/Run/ then type 'Explorer'.)
Step 3 - Delete the VIP.TPS file from the FleetVIP folder on the new computer.
Step 4 - Copy your VIP.TPS file from the old computer to the FleetVIP folder on the new computer. A USB flash drive is a good option for this transfer.
Step 5 - Run the program and verify your data is there.
(Note: Font size preferences and saved search queries are saved to ...\Appdata\Local\Alembx\Autovip.ini and backed up to ...\documents\Fvipinibak.txt. You can restore using a similar process or simply re-enter your font preferences, etc.)
